Early Childhood Studies
|
Welcome to
RBCs Elementary Education and Early Childhood web page!
These two programs are well
established and have been very successful in preparing alumni to
excel in their chosen field of education. Whether in public or
private sectors, RBC alumni are making a difference in the lives
of children. Students in these programs are equipped to teach
basic subject matter found in the curriculum of elementary schools
or preschools but also to instill Christian character and moral
values that will shape the direction of their students' lives.
The demand for good teachers is
growing, and RBC is a great place to prepare for a career in
education. Students graduating with our four-year degree in Bible
with a Minor in Elementary Education have found Christian schools
eager to hire them. For students choosing to work in public
education, there is a lateral entry/licensure program set up with
our local state university. Students dual-enroll at RBC and
Elizabeth City State University upon completing just 15 hours
beyond RBC's requirements and passing state tests receive a North
Carolina state teaching certificate. With RBC's regional
accreditation status, lateral entry/licensure and master's
programs are available to RBC graduates at many state and private
colleges. Some students choose to do certification work in their
home states. A certificate in Teaching English as a Second
Language is also available with our Elementary Education minor at
RBC.
RBC's Early Childhood program leads
to a two-year associate degree that prepares students to work with
preschool children. This program meets North Carolina's
requirements for Early Childhood teachers.
Students in this
program may also wish to take professional courses in non-profit
management to prepare for owning and operating a daycare.
I am Renee Lease, I serve as advisor for these two
education programs and teach the professional courses offered in
both programs. I look forward to communicating with you and
exploring how RBC may help you to prepare for your future. If you
have a love for children and a desire to see them develop in
Christian character as well as achieve their academic goals
teaching may be the career for you and RBC the place to start!

Elementary Education Minor -
Bachelor of Science Degree
Christian schools in the United States and abroad
are increasing in number and are in need of qualified teachers, while the home-school
movement has become a popular option for many families. The Elementary Education minor
provides foundation in educational theory and philosophy along with practical field
experiences in order to prepare the student to teach K-6 children in these settings.
Graduates may also pursue graduate studies in the field. Students interested in this
option should consult with their advisor and plan to meet the admissions criteria for the
graduate school they plan to attend. Eighty per cent of the 1997-99 graduates who earned
this minor are known to be in teaching positions; 10% are in youth ministry positions; 10%
are in full-time graduate study.

State Licensure Option
Students may choose to pursue state licensure for teaching in
public schools. The state licensure option allows qualified Roanoke students to
dual-enroll at Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) as a transient student. Completing
the lateral entry/licensure requirements enables students to have their names and records
submitted to the North Carolina State Department of Public Instruction in order to receive
state licensure for teaching in public schools.
State licensure enables the graduate to teach in the State of North
Carolina in K-6 education. In addition, North Carolina has reciprocal teaching agreements
with most other states, enabling graduates to teach in public schools outside of North
Carolina. Students can complete all requirements for the degree in four years except for
eight semester hours of observation and supervised teaching.

Student Testimonies

Many,
children today come from broken homes and difficult
situations. They
are looking for someone to show them love and care.
We as Christians are the best people for the job.
Not only can we love the children, but we can also
share with them the one who loves them unconditionally, so
much that He would die for them.
As
I begin my first year as a teacher, I am very thankful for all
the knowledge I gained in my four years at Roanoke Bible
College. Being in
the elementary education program put me in constant contact
with children, learning materials, various methods, and
experienced teachers. In
Teaching Reading and Language Arts, I was able to complete a
practicum working in a local elementary school with children,
helping them gain comprehension concepts.
In Classroom Management, I learned how to make rules,
consequences, and rewards that will help my class be the best
that it can be, teaching the children to be self-disciplined.
I was challenged in every education class I took at RBC
to think of new ways to help children become active learners.
The staff encouraged me along my four years, always
willing to help or simply to listen.
I’m thankful for my education at RBC.
